EARNINGS: Evergy CEO discusses 4.6 GW pipeline of large load customers
- Several settlement agreements have been reached in Kansas and Missouri, including 1,840 MW of natural gas and 324 MW of solar projects
- Evergy outlined 15 GW of total incremental demand being “actively considered” across its service territories
During Evergy’s 2Q25 earnings call on August 7, CEO David Campbell discussed the company’s 4.6 GW pipeline of “Tier 1” large load customers.
Campbell said the company is “actively building” 1.1 GW of load for large load customers with operations to start in 1H26.
At the same time, he said the company is “finalizing agreements” for 1 GW to 1.5 GW for two large data center customers after executing “various service agreements” with USD 200m of financial commitments posted by the customers. Campbell said this could increase the company’s load growth forecast to 4-5% through 2029 and expects to share further information about the new customers later this year.
In addition, Campbell said Evergy has 2 GW to 3.5 GW of load in the pipeline representing “multiple customers that have acquired land or land rights, signed letters of agreements, and for which transmission and generation capacity studies are underway.” He said over USD 30m of financial commitments have been received from customers making up this section of the company’s pipeline with further agreements to be executed in 2H25.
Overall, Campbell outlined 15 GW of total incremental demand being “actively considered” across its service territories. He said the 10 GW beyond the 4.6 GW outlined as “Tier 1” is “not yet in the active queue as Evergy evaluates opportunities to serve.” He said the utility has the potential to address a portion of this demand prior to 2030, but that the greatest potential would be after the end of this decade.
Campbell also outlined a number of settlement agreements reached in Kansas and Missouri in late July, including 1,840 MW of natural gas and 324 MW of solar.
The approved projects include the 710 MW Sumner County gas project set to be completed by 2029, 710 MW Reno County gas project with a 2030 COD, 440 MW Nodaway County Gas project with a 2030 COD, as well as three solar projects, 159 MW Kansas Sky Solar, 100 MW Foxtrot Solar and 65 MW Sunflower Sky solar, all expected to reach COD in 2027.
Notably, Campbell said he expects Evergy to receive full solar tax credits for all three of the approved solar projects.
Looking ahead after the expiration of tax credits for renewable projects in 2028, he said there is “potential for more of a balance toward storage” as tax credits for that asset class persists through 2032.
