Trina moves for Abbey’s 50 MW Staffordshire BESS development

Trina Solar has closed the acquisition of the consented 49.9 MW Chatterley Whitfield battery storage project from Abbey Group, it is understood.

The Chinese PV company secured the deal in recent days, according to company records, and will now take on the construction stage for the two-hour duration BESS, set to be built on a site on the edge of Stoke-on-Trent.

Abbey Group took the project through its planning phase, which resulted in a positive determination from Stoke-on-Trent Council in 2023.

The developer also secured a distribution network grid connection for October 2025, according to data published by National Grid in May.

The battery could be sited in the midst of a larger regeneration project underway on the site of a disused colliery in the area, which may also feature a data centre, as well as geothermal, solar and wind generation.

Trina and Abbey Group were contacted for comment.
