NETHERLANDS: Begro approaches market with 400 MW-plus battery storage portfolio
Dutch developer Begro has put up for sale a 400 MW / 1.6 GWh-plus battery storage portfolio comprising three projects located across the Netherlands, it is understood.
The group, which also develops onshore wind farms and is backed by the De Groot family, has appointed Rabobank as financial advisor on the “Project Volta” transaction, with teasers having started circulating in the market this week, according to market sources.
The BESS assets in the portfolio are all believed to be “close to ready-to-build”, comprising 31.5 MW / 126 MWh Dronten, 180 MW / 720 MWh Westermeerdijk and 200 MW / 800 MWh Eemshaven.
Begro Energy Projects BV announced in December 2024 that it had secured irrevocable approval for the amended zoning plan of the up to 250 MW Westermeerdijk project.
The independent developer – which has previously participated in the development and construction of the Westermeerwind (144 MW) and Fryslân (383 MW) onshore wind farms – intends to have secured all the necessary environmental permits to start construction on the project in the second half of 2025.
The Westermeerdijk BESS site is located next to TenneT’s Westermeerdijk high-voltage substation, which in turn is directly connected to the Ens high-voltage substation, also in the Noordoostpolder, by a 110 kV cable. The Ens station is part of the 380 kV ring network.
The partially co-located battery project is adjacent to the 429 MW Noordoostpolder onshore wind farm.
The Dronten BESS scheme, for which permits became irrevocable in September 2024, is also understood to be co-located, as it will be connected to the private network of Windplan Groen (GDG).
A total of eight wind farms and one solar park are connected to this closed distribution grid, which are connected to TenneT’s public high-voltage grid via a single connection.
“By adding a battery in this closed distribution system, it is possible to balance well and make maximum use of renewable energy,” according to the Bergo website.
Begro’s 400 MW-plus portfolio is projected to require an approximate capex of EUR 400m.
The launch of the sales process for the assets comes just as Lion Storage earlier this week announced financial close for its 364 MW / 1.457 GWh, EUR 350m Mufasa project.
The BESS project is located in the North Sea Port, an area stretching from Vlissingen on the coast to Ghent. It will repurpose a grid connection in Borssele to a high voltage substation that previously served a coal-fired power plant. Construction will begin soon, and it is expected to come online in H1 2027.
Eneco will manage the day-to-day operations of the project, which will generate income on a full-merchant basis via the Dutch wholesale power and ancillary services markets.
