A total of 715 projects have qualified to be studied in the first cycle of PJM’s reformed interconnection process.
According to an August 3 press release, the April 27 deadline for this new first-ready, first-served approach saw 811 proposals for new resources, subject to an initial screening process that vet applications for technical information and financial deposits. The applications not included in the first cycle can be viewed here.
The applications are in 13 states as follows: VA (183), IL (107), OH (103), PA (82), MD (61), IN (49), NJ (44), WV (30), NC (19), KY *(16), MI (12), DE (7), IA (1).
By sector, the applications fall in: Storage (314 – 60.01 GW), Natural Gas (146 – 98.4 GW), Solar (117 – 11.75 GW), Onshore Wind (61 – 3.89 GW), Solar | Storage (37 – 7.55 GW), Nuclear (25 – 17.73 GW), Hydro-electric (5 – ), Coal (4, Hydrogen (2, Methane (1). To view as a chart click here.
Counties most impacted by the development include: Spencer – IN (4 – 8.51 GW), Luzerne – PA (8 – 6.8 GW) and Fayette – PA (6 – 5.26 GW). All 281 counties impacted are ranked here.
A total of 21 utilities are involved in the new process with Dominion (177), AEP (151) and ComEd (107) accounting for over 60% of the applications.
NPM POI Groups with increased activity can be found here, notably Cunningham – VAwhere four projects will connect for 3.54 GW. In total 143 NPM POI Groups are involved in CO1.
Additionally, initial mapping indicates these developers have benefited from today’s announcement. This data will be updated over the coming hours.
The projects will be reviewed over a one-to-two-year process and there is no remaining backlog, said PJM. The RTO expects electricity demand to increase 70 GW by 2038.
In early 2027, applications in Transition Cycle 2 (TC2) are expected to execute signed agreements, with Transition Cycle 1 to follow in 2028, said the RTO.
