The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) announced awards for eight new bulk energy storage projects and 13 large-scale renewable energy projects.
The contracted projects are expected to provide 1.7 GW of energy resources and generate over USD 3.7bn in private investment.
These awards reinforce the state’s commitment to the development of locally produced clean energy and energy storage, according to a press release.
Bulk Energy Storage Awards
NYSERDA launched its first Bulk Energy Storage solicitation to procure 1 GW of energy storage last year. The agency published a list of 46 proposals that had passed initial review in March.
The eight contracted projects are expected to add 950 MW of new energy storage capacity and provide critical reliability benefits to the state’s electrical grid. The projects are expected to be in-service by the end of 2030, and include the following:
- Lighthouse Energy Storage is a proposed 250 MW, four-hour energy storage project being developed by Neoen US and Grid Connected Infrastructure (GCI) in Chautauqua County with a point-of-interconnection at Gardenville – Dunkirk Line 74 230 kV
- Zenobe Burns is a 100 MW, four-hour energy storage project being developed by Zenobe Energy in Allegany County with a point-of-interconnection (POI) at Moraine Rd 115kV Substation
- Grid Connected Infrastructure (GCI) proposed Eastwater Energy Storage, a 100 MW, four-hour energy storage project in Monroe County with a POI at Station 82 – Station 121 Line 23 115kV
- KCE NY 5 is a proposed 94 MW, four-hour energy storage project being developed by Key Capture Energy (KCE) in Ulster County with a POI at Ohioville 115 kV
- Blue Spruce Storage is a proposed 133 MW, four-hour storage project being developed by Flatiron Energy in Bronx County with a POI at Mott Haven 138KV Bus
- Palladium Storage is a proposed 123 MW, four-hour energy storage project being developed by Flatiron Energy in Bronx County with a POI at Hell Gate Annex 138KV Substation
- Holtsville Energy Storage is a proposed 110 MW energy storage project being developed by Savion and Hecate Grid in Suffolk County with a POI at West Bus 138 kV. NPM reported recently that a Nofar USA-led JV was seeking permission from the New York Public Service Commission to acquire the project.
- KCE proposed KCE NY 37, a 150 MW, four-hour storage project in Suffolk County with a POI at Sills Rd – Brookhaven 138 kV line
NYSERDA plans to issue the second annual Bulk Energy Storage Request for Proposals (RFP) by the end of the year.
Land-Based Renewable Energy Awards
NYSERDA also launched its ninth annual Land-Based Renewable Energy Solicitation (Tier 1 RFP) in September of last year.
The 13 contracted projects are expected to provide more than 719 MW of renewable capacity and be operational by 2030, including:
- Flint Mine Solar is a proposed 100 MW solar project under development by Hudson Energy Development and D.E. Shaw Renewable Investments (DESRI) in Greene County with an POI at LaFarge – Pleasant Valley 115kV, Feura Bush – North Catskill 115kV
- Hecate Energy Greene 1 is a proposed 20 MW solar project under development by Hecate Energy in Greene County with a POI at Coxsackie – North Catskill 69kV
- Hecate Energy Greene 2 is a proposed 10 MW solar project under development by Hecate Energy in Greene County with a POI at Coxsackie 13.8kV
- Brookfield Renewable was awarded for Spier Falls, a 3 MW operational hydro-electric project in Saratoga County with a POI at Spier Falls – EJ West 115kV
- High Dam Hydroelectric Facility, Oswego County
- Wethersfield Windpark is an operational 126 MW onshore wind project developed by AES Clean Energy in Wyoming County.
- Chateaugay Windpark is an operational 106.5 MW onshore wind project developed by AES Clean Energy in Franklin County
- Diamond Island Hydroelectric Facility, Jefferson County
- Ellenburg Windpark is an operational 81 MW onshore wind project developed by AES Clean Energy in Clinton County and Franklin County
- Greens Corners Solar Park, Jefferson County
- Rich Road Solar Energy Center is a proposed 240 MW solar project under development by EDF Group in St. Lawrence County
- Theresa Hydroelectric Project, Jefferson County
- Canisteo Wind Energy Center, Steuben County
New York will add these projects to its portfolio of 95 solar, onshore and offshore wind and hydroelectric projects that are expected to deliver roughly 10.5 GW of energy to the grid.
