UNITED KINGDOM: Bluestone and Eku Energy complete on latest sale as 240 MW BESS changes hands

Eku Energy has completed the purchase of its latest project from developer Bluestone Energy with a deal for a planned 240 MW battery storage project in Chessington, in south-west of London.

The BESS is planned to be built at a site near to the Chessington World of Adventures theme park and connect into the existing Chessington substation located to the south of the resort.

The project is understood to be in a relatively early stage of development, although Bluestone completed a screening request with Kingston upon Thames Council in 2023, with the latter ruling that an environmental impact assessment would not be required to be completed for the scheme.

Chessington BESS also has a grid connection date in 2037, according to data published by National Energy System Operator, although many developers are hoping current grid queue reforms will bring forward long connection waits.

Eku’s acquisition is the latest in a series of pipeline battery projects acquired from Bluestone over recent months, including the 240 MW Solomons Farm in Kent, among several others.

Eku Energy and Bluestone were contacted for comment.
