UNITED KINGDOM: FRV puts operating and RTB BESS portfolio on the market

FRV is working on a disposal process for its operating and ready-to-build UK BESS assets, according to market sources.

The group currently owns three operating UK BESS assets – 7.5 MW / 15 MWh Holes Bay in Dorset, which was commissioned in 2020, 34 MW / 68 MWh Contego in West Sussex (2021), and 99 MW / 198 MWh Clay Tye in Essex (2023).

The schemes are all made up of Tesla megapacks, which typically use Tesla’s Autobidder AI software for real-time trading and control.

The group is also putting two ready-to-build 50 MW / 200 MWh BESS projects on the market – Hollybush near London and Dunbar in East Lothian, Scotland – it is understood. The schemes are projected to have grid connection dates over 2026-2027.

Elgar Middleton (financial) is understood to be advising FRV on the process, with approaches to the market having started over recent weeks.

The Spain-based IPP is understood to be open to receiving separate bids for the operating and RTB assets, and is believed to be looking to sign a deal in April.

FRV announced late last year that it had submitted a portfolio of 1.8 GW of solar and battery energy storage projects to the UK’s Gate 2 window of NESO’s Connection Reform process.

The projects are fully permitted and seek grid connection dates between 2026 and 2029.

The portfolio includes large battery energy storage projects such as 400 MW Bicker Fen, 400 MW Stocking Pelham, 400 MW Stow Manor, 200 MW Ansty and 200 MW Maes Melin, in addition to Hollybush and Dunbar, and the Malice Farm project, which will combine 50 MW of solar generation with storage.

FRV did not respond to a request for comment.
