UNITED KINGDOM: Orrön Energy mulls behind-the-metre solutions for 1.1 GW of secured data centre capacity
Orrön Energy is mulling behind-the-metre solutions for its 1.1 GW of data centre projects across the UK, according to its Q4 2025 Earnings Call.
The 1.1 GW of capacity refers to three sites, one of which is a 400 MW site based in the East Midlands, while the two Hertfordshire facilities are 300 MW and 400 MW in size. This comes as data centre projects move from being IT projects into power projects.
The sites have the optionality for private wire via solar and battery projects, as per the earnings call.
“If I look at some of the hyperscaler assets, they want two or three sources of power to their site anyway,” CEO, Daniel Fitzgerald said yesterday (February 18). “So it may be that we can accelerate the coming-on stream date by an element, by providing behind-the-metre and then evolving with the grid connection as it’s available, but it’s very early days still.”
Fitzgerald suggested the grid connection date may mark when the sites reach full capacity, rather than when operations initially begin, with behind-the-meter solutions potentially enabling earlier phases of development.
“We do expect our grid dates to be in the early 2030s, but we’re not going to have the grid dates until we get the grid offers expected later this year,” Commercial Director, Axel Wikner said.
Wilkner also noted that ‘crazy valuations’ of GBP 1m per MW are being seen across sites with early connection dates.
“The earlier you can connect, the higher the value,” he said. “You also need to be close to the availability zones – which we are for at least two of our three projects – and then the further out you go, the lower the value is.”
“So, it’s important to get that, grid access locked in, and then to work on those bridging solutions so that we can get a premium in that size,” he concluded.
In January, it was reported that the Swedish energy company has obtained grid connections for six large-scale projects in the UK, including 1.1 GW of data centre capacity across three sites.
In total, Orrön Energy secured gate-to-grid applications for 2.9 GW of projects, with a further 1.8 GW of solar developments.
“When I look at the potential magnitude of the revenues from that, it becomes a game changer for the company and material in terms of the market cap,” Fitzgerald said in reference to these projects.
As is the case for the company’s wider development platform, Orrön Energy is not looking to operate these sites, and instead plans on divesting before large capital commitments are made.
Across its portfolio, Orrön Energy’s multi-gigawatt platform in the UK, Germany and France delivered 310 MW of project divestments during 2025.
