Brockwell Energy acquires UK solar and storage developer RNA Energy

Brockwell Energy has closed a deal to acquire fellow UK-based developer RNA Energy and its circa 1.5 GW solar and battery storage pipeline.

The Edinburgh-headquartered development platform will, as a result of the deal, make its first big move into UK solar development.

Pioneer Point-backed Brockwell has, since its formation in 2017, been predominantly active in the onshore wind, energy-from-waste and – latterly – the battery storage sector.

Some of the first assets from RNA’s pipeline are now expected to enter construction over the course of 2024.

Its projects range in size from 5 MW solar sites connected to distribution networks around the UK, to up to several hundred MW facilities.

The latter category includes 500 MW apiece transmission-connected battery storage developments in Eaton Socon, Cambridgeshire and Willington, Derbyshire which are in early development and have been given grid connection dates in 2028.

RNA has another 300 MW battery scheme in the works at Didcot, Oxfordshire which is due to connect in 2027, alongside several smaller facilities in planning in Tranent and Kilmarnock in Scotland, as well as in Rush Green, Hertfordshire in England.

The group has previously offloaded some of its consented projects to investors including Susi Partners, while it also took a near 100 MW pair of batteries to financial close alongside Nippon Koei back in late 2021.

Brockwell, which is understood to have been advised by Gowling WLG (legal), and RNA, which was advised by EY (financial), were both contacted for comment.
