IRELAND: European Energy strikes for new Irish solar farm

European Energy is understood to have closed a deal to acquire a 62 MW solar PV development in County Meath, Ireland from developer BioXL.

The Danish group secured the consented Clonymeath solar project earlier in the summer, according to company records, roughly concurrent with the approval of a circa 5-hectare extension to the previously approved 91-hectare scheme.

BioXL had taken the plans through the permitting phase with Meath County Council in 2021, before successfully negotiating a later appeal against the original decision which was heard by national body An Bord Pleanála in 2022.

The solar farm was then confirmed as one of the successful applicants for a grid connection offer during EirGrid’s Enduring Connection Policy round 2.3 held in late 2022.

With the results of Ireland’s RESS 4 auction for low carbon incentives due to be revealed next week, Clonymeath could be a candidate to scoop a tariff in the contest.

Industry players are expecting winning tariffs to come in at only a marginal circa EUR 5/MWh discount to the EUR 110 /MWh ceiling price for solar PV.

European Energy and BioXL were both contacted.
