STORAGE: SSE Renewables grows storage portfolio with 100 MW N Ireland buy

SSE Renewables has added to its battery storage portfolio with the acquisition of a 100 MW / 200 Mh project in Northern Ireland, it is understood.

County Londonderry-based Heron Bros launched the sale of the consented Tamnamore project in Q3 2023, as previously reported by NPM Europe, with SSE subsequently emerging in recent days as the buyer of the scheme, according to filings.

Located near the town of Coalisland in County Tyrone, the project secured planning approval from Mid Ulster District Council in June 2023.

It will be built at a site immediately adjacent to the existing Tamnamore substation, which will provide its grid connection via an underground cable, will comprise 55 battery storage containers and is expected to take around 12 months to build.

Heron in October 2023 also won planning consent for a 22 MW storage scheme in Carrickfergus, to the north of Belfast, while it has also submitted plans for a 17 MW storage facility in Londonderry.

Grant Thornton (financial) advised Heron Bros on the Tamnamore BESS sale.
