UNITED KINGDOM: Peterborough tests market ahead GBP 70m renewables project Launch

Peterborough City Council in England has launched a soft market test to explore delivery partnerships for its Peterborough Integrated Renewables Infrastructure (PIRI) project.

The PIRI initiative, part of the council’s commitment to reaching net-zero emissions by 2030, is designed to harness waste energy from the Peterborough Energy Recovery Facility, which is operated by Viridor under a 30-year public-private partnership with the council, to supply a network across the city.

The council has identified 53 GWh of potential heat demand within the established bounds of the PIRI catchment area, with more than 200 GWh across the entire city, while the authority is also aiming to establish a local electricity network with infrastructure for electric vehicle charging as part of its plans.

With an estimated total project value of GBP 70m, PIRI has so far secured GBP 13.5m in funding from the UK government’s Green Heat Network Fund.

The council has set a deadline of 1 November 2024 for interested firms to respond to its market outreach exercise, after which it intends to conduct one-on-one meetings with these groups.

A more formal procurement exercise for PIRI is expected to follow after the conclusion of the current phase.
